NATIONAL BOARD OF HEALTH AND WELLNESS EXAM NBC-HWC Certification

About: The National Board for Health & Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) is the credentialing board that is overseen by a board of directors, and supported by committees composed of volunteers and staff members who seek to advance the profession of health & wellness coaching. NBWHC was formed in 2012, to standardize health and wellness coaching. In 2016, the organization began working with the National Board of Medical Examiners (nbme.org) to establish a board certification examination, which has since certified more than 5,000 health & wellness coaches in the fields of healthcare, employee wellness, government, and private practice. The National Board Certified Health & Wellness Coaching community is composed of trained, educated coaches, who are passionate about working with patients and clients for better health outcomes.

    NBC-HWC Certification Requirements

To Qualify for the National Board Certification Exam you must:
    1. complete a NBHWC approved training program, such as HWCA's training course.
    2. complete 50 health & wellness coaching sessions.
    3. have an associate’s degree or higher or 4,000 hours work experience (any field)

The highly-valued NBC-HWC certification is a representation of a standard of excellence, knowledge, and training. WHAT IS A HEALTH COACH?

According to the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaches, “Health and Wellness Coaches partner with clients seeking self-directed, lasting changes, aligned with their values, which promote health and wellness and, thereby, enhance well-being.” The American Medical Association (AMA) defines a coach as a non-physician health care professional certified by NBHWC or NCHEC.

Research studies have clearly shown that having a health coach can be very beneficial in facilitating behavior changes conducive to a healthier lifestyle. Given that the United States is now experiencing an epidemic of obesity, diabetes, and other diseases related to poor nutrition and physical inactivity, health coaches can play a vital role in helping to combat the problem.  As a health and wellness coach, the coach is in a great position to serve as an accountability partner to their clients. From day one, and for as long as the client is in the program, the coach can offer inspiration and guidance to the client. The coach can also assure their client that they will be in their corner to encourage them when they feel like giving up".
