    WHAT IS A HEALTH COACH?

According to the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaches, “Health and Wellness Coaches partner with clients seeking self-directed, lasting changes, aligned with their values, which promote health and wellness and, thereby, enhance well-being.” The American Medical Association (AMA) defines a coach as a non-physician health care professional certified by NBHWC or NCHEC.

Research studies have clearly shown that having a health coach can be very beneficial in facilitating behavior changes conducive to a healthier lifestyle. Given that the United States is now experiencing an epidemic of obesity, diabetes, and other diseases related to poor nutrition and physical inactivity, health coaches can play a vital role in helping to combat the problem.  As a health and wellness coach, the coach is in a great
position to serve as an accountability partner to their clients.

    What can a coach do?

A coach may cover any of the following wellness aspects in a coaching session.

    - Losing weight
    - Smoking cessation
    - Reducing stress
    - Improving interpersonal
    relationships and self-image
    - Eating mindfully and healthier
    - Achieving better work-life balance
    - Increasing life satisfaction
    - Setting personal goals and
    following through
    - Stretching the mind to adjust
    the perception of oneself
    - Prioritizing self-care
    - Balancing wellness with
    a busy schedule
    - Erasing negative thoughts and substituting a positive mindset

    What shouldn't a health coach
    attempt to do?

A coach needs to stay within
    their scope of practice

    - Perform therapy
    - Assess nutritional needs
     -Plan specific medical nutrition menus
    - Assign specific exercises
    - Evaluate lab results
    - Make any medical or mental health diagnoses or prescribe treatment
    - Engage in any other practices or activities in which the health coach lacks the proper training or credentials as stipulated by professional standards or law.

    Take control of your career

-Work your own hours or contract with  a company
    -Set your own coaching fees
    -Choose your speciality
